Back in the 90's I never imagined I would own a pair of aviator sunglasses. As far as I was concerned they were far too 80's, Plastic Sunglasses Top Gun, uncool but fast forward a few years later and having become cool again with everyone from Cheryl Cole to Brad Pitt wearing them I had to have a pair for myself.
According to an article I read, Ray-Bans were founded in 1937 by Bausch & Lomb. They were introduced for the United States Army Air Corps. Their introduction was quite an interesting story. Lieutenant John MacCready returned from a balloon flying adventure and complained that the sun had permanently damaged his eyes. He contacted Bausch & Lomb asking them to create sunglasses that would provide protection and also look elegant. On May 7, 1937, Bausch & Lomb took out the patent.
The aviator is just one of the styles that Ray-Bans produce but they are the most flattering on most people I feel and a look I really love for myself. The article I read goes on to say that aviator sunglasses were given their name due to their oblique teardrop shape, which matched those of the smoked-lens flying goggles which Ray-Ban was then selling to the Army and Navy. They do have a very unique shape to them and cover the face and eye really well. This design then prevents as much light as possible from entering the eye from any angle which makes them not only a fashionable brand but also good for the eyes too. I have a number of different sunglasses but do find that these are the best for blocking out the most Metal aviator sunglasses light and best for driving in.
The aviators come with metal frames which I find fit better than plastic frames as they stay on the back of my ears better. They have a hooked end so they hook onto the back of my ears well and are really comfortable to wear. I bought a pair which have slight blue coloured lenses but they do come in all shades which is great as you can really tailor each pair to fit your outfit. Most eye glasses company sell these pairs as part of their sunglasses range as well as The Sunglass Hut and the Ray Bans website itself. Prices vary, I bought mine for around £90 and these are without any type of prescription but you can buy them with prescription lenses and these obviously cost more as do the more sophisticated looking ones.
Ray Bans have the word Ray Ban written on the left hand lens at the top of the lens so you know you are buying and wearing an authentic pair although I'm sure they are loads of fakes for sale out there. Each pair comes with a black case Metal Sunglasses which I definitely recommend using so you don't scratch or break your glasses.
A great style that hopefully will not go out of fashion for me.
